A new fund emerging

Introducing the Scottish Equitable Lazard Emerging Markets fund.

Emerging markets, showing signs of contagion

Until recently, it seemed the emerging economies were immune to the worldwide credit crunch that sent developed markets crashing towards the tail end of 2007. But the onset of greater volatility in the sector is evident in the three- and six-month returns for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index and the MSCI BRIC Index (which tracks returns from the BRIC economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China). Up one minute (the MSCI BRIC Index returned 4.01% over three months to 30 June 2008, outperforming the other major world indices) and down the next (bottom of the heap on -13.0% over six months to 30 June 2008). Some are still talking of the decoupling of the emerging economies from their developed counterparts, while many financial commentators are now saying there’s value in the sector to come, but you have to pick your country.
