Early intervention can help stop employee absenteeism becoming a problem.
Statistics show that once someone has been absent from work for more than 26 weeks, there’s only a 50% chance of them returning.
After 12 months, this halves to 25% (Source: CIPD news release, January 2005).
It takes a lot of time, effort and expense to recruit and train the right staff. It’s a shame to lose out on that investment by not monitoring and responding to absence.
Our own experience shows that early intervention works. The earlier we’re told about absence the sooner we can intervene.
In the six months to 31 December 2007, where we received early notification of claims, we were able to:
- return 71% back to work within the deferred period (typically 26 weeks)
- fully assess 87% and make a decision within the deferred period
